An Unique Support From Besiktas JK To TRCS For Dissemination Of Emblem

Tunca, 8 years old Besiktas JK fan, who does shopping with his family at the “Eagle Nest” where Besiktas JK products are sold on İstanbul BJK Inonu Stadium, says “I think, Red Crescent logo suits Besiktas JK shirt. I like it!” when he shows his new shirt with a huge smile on his face.
When we ask, “What do you know Turkish Red Crescent?” he answers back, “Turkish Red Crescent helps us and provides food, tent and everything we need at disaster times.”
Founded in 1903 Besiktas JK, first sport club of Turkey, has received many positive comments at the Turkey’s public opinion after taking decision to advertise Turkish Red Crescent emblem on the back part of their shirt. Having achieved many firsts during their glorious 106 –years- long past, the Besiktas JK has established another first by wearing shirts that advertised for the Turkish Red Crescent.
Besiktas JK has blazed a trail at the Turkish Football History. Besiktas JK wants to be the leading club at the civil society initiative. For the first time in Turkey, a football club takes a logo of a non-governmental organization on the shirt. Turkish Football Federation gave permission to all football clubs to find sponsorship for back part of their shirts to support football clubs financially. While other league teams carried their privately-owned sponsors’ names on their shirts and get million dollars income, Besiktas choosed to advertise Turkish Red Crescent voluntarily.
Besiktas JK, which will represent Turkey at the UEFA Champions League as Champion of Turkey, also has blazed a trail in the world with the decision to put a Red Crescent emblem on its shirt. This unique support of Besiktas, known as “Black Eagles”, has become a special and valuable step to the visibility of Red Crescent emblem and to make Red Crescent’s fundamental principles more familiar by large mess.
A similar cooperation was practiced between Barcelona and UNICEF in 2006. Futbol Club Barcelona made a partnership to put UNICEF logo on its shirt and it was the first logo placement in the club’s 107-years long history.
Besiktas JK goalkeeper Rustu Recber, who played for Barcelona as well, says “It is a very important step. It is a first in Turkey. I played for Barcelona and now I am playing for Besiktas JK. So, it is a very nice coincidence for me. I am honored to be a player, who has weared shirt of these football clubs, which has social responsibility.”
Rustu also says it would be a great example for other football clubs in Turkey and all over the world and he adds, “In this way, we can raise the awareness of public. Red Crescent is a very important society for our country. I am very pleased to be a member of this club which has blazed a trail in Turkey.”
German player of Besiktas JK Michael Fink, also an activist of animal rights, says, “I think it’s a good promotion for Red Crescent and for the Club also. We want to help them. We want to do more for them. Red Cross and Red Crescent Socities are important for all people in every country. Each country may need help in the world. It doesn’t matter if people are rich or not. So it’s good for all people. You can come and you can help people. For me RC/RC societies are one of the best societies in the world.”
According to young Slovak player Filip Holosko, Besiktas JK is an honorable football club. He says, “Besiktas JK has refused to make an agreement with a firm and made a partnership with Turkish Red Crescent –equal with Red Cross in my country- I am pleased to support Red Crescent by this chance.” He also adds that he can be a volunteer of Turkish Red Crescent for its TV commercials.
As a player who played for Real Sociedad and Villareal in Spain, Nihat Kahveci, underlines that Besiktas JK is the first club which wears the emblem of Red Crescent, and adds “Turkish Red Crescent is a very important society for us. Whenever we need, TRCS is near us and helps us. So, everyone should support Turkish Red Crescent.”

Football-loving at the BJK Inonu Stadium, witnessed to a historical moment before the match between Besiktas JK and Antalyaspor on 17th August, 2009. Besiktas JK - “The Black and White” – for the first time stepped on the pitch wearing shirts “Turkish Red Crescent” written on their back. Before match, all people at the stadium standed in homage for victims of 17th August 1999 Marmara Earthquake.
Besiktas JK President Yildirim Demiroren, who rejected all advertising offers for the shirts of the team and gave permission to this civil society initiative, explains new application as, “This is the most appropriate decision for a club like Besiktas, which is the favorite team of Turkish public. As the President of this great club, I will always be proud to be a part of it.”
Tekin Kucukali, President of the Turkish Red Crescent Society, has sent a letter to Yildirim Demiroren, and said, “I would like to express that as Turkish Red Crescent, we are very pleased to be a part of this honorable partnership. This historical cooperation has won general approval from everyone who is either Besiktas JK fans or other fans of football clubs.”
“Carsi” against everything except Red Crescent
Küçükali said, “I would like to thank all Besiktas JK supporters but especially Carsi Group –the most famous supporter group of Besiktas- which supported Turkish Red Crescent all the time and organized many activities for us. They are very well-known with their slogan ‘Carsi is against everything!’ But now they have new slogan: ‘Carsi is against everything except Red Crescent.’ We are ready to make similar cooperation with other sport clubs. This is a chance to dissemination of our emblem at national and international level.”
Leader of the Carsi Group, Alen Markaryan, 43, tells his opinions about this partnership as, “At every moments and positions of the match Red Crescent emblem will be visible. I think it is very appropriate decision. I believe that Turkish Red Crescent will get more support of public after that introduction.”
A member of the Carsi Group says, “Money is very important at the football industry recently. In this situation, Besiktas had played an important role to advertise Red Crescent emblem free of charge. This is a very valuable support. We have made blood donation campaigns with Turkish Red Crescent. We do not shed blood, we donate blood!”
Carsi Group has organized many activities such as blood donation campaigns countrywide, supported “Don’t let Gaza Cry Campaign” with banners and made donation for Turkish Red Crescent’s coin boxes.

Besiktas players hand-in-hand with RC volunteers
Besiktas players weared shirts with Red Crescent emblem at Antalyaspor and Genclerbirligi matches. On 28th August in BJK Inonu Stadium, before Gaziantep match, Turkish Red Crescent organized an event to thank Besiktas JK.
In a pre-match ceremony held at the BJK Inonu Stadium, Head of Turkish Red Crescent Women’s Branch Gulay Kuris and President of Turkish Red Crescent Besiktas Branch Mehmet Nuri Kuris, presented friendship plates to Besiktas Vice-President Ertunc Sogancioglu and Technical Director Mustafa Denizli for the club’s outgoing support.
In addition to the ceremony, Besiktas football squad entered the pitch hand-in-hand with Turkish Red Crescent Youth Volunteers as a banner prepared by the Red Crescent that said “Thanks for Your Noble Support” was displayed at the stands. In memory of the event, the referee Deniz Coban and his linemen also were received friendship plaques by Turkish Red Crescent.

Last year, Turkish Red Crescent made a similar cooperation with Turk Telekom Basketball Team. Turk Telekom players weared Red Crescent emblem on the front part of their shirts and this partnership won Turkish public approval.
