Zakat, one of the pillars of Islam, means the sum that the persons who have assets in the quantity regarded as the measure of wealth (nisab) from a religious standpoint must give to persons in need.
In case one year has elapsed on the goods for which zakat is to be paid, and in case the assets for which zakat is to be paid is more than one’s debts of one year and his/her main needs, zakat is farz for Muslims who have come of age, are free and of sound mind.
Nisab is the name of the minimum wealth measure set for forms of worship such as zakat. This measure is 20 misqals for gold (80.18 gr), 5 camels, 30 cattle or 40 goats.

The persons to whom zakat will be given are specified in the Holy Quran. These people include the poor, the helpless, officers given the duty of zakat collection, the people whose hearts are desired to be brought closer to Islam, called the muellefe-i kulub, those who are to be freed from captivity, those in debt, those who are in jihad in the way of Allah, and those who are stranded while travelling.
It is not permissible to give zakat to those who are in a position to give zakat, to non-Muslims, to first degree relatives (mother, father, grandmother, grandfather, children, grandchildren, etc.), and between husband and wife.
Zakat is not given in the form of jewelry other than gold and silver.
It is permissible from a religious standpoint to pay zakat and fitra to the associations, foundations, institutions, and charity founds which compile the zakats and the fitra they receive in a fund and are known to spend it only for the channels set forth in Surah At-Tawbah Ayat 60, and which are run by individuals who are fully trusted.
Zakat can be paid in person, by proxy, or via bank transfers /EFTs
Persons who have made written or verbal commitments for providing the basic needs for safe and healthy continuation of life such as shelter, clothing and food do not have to give zakat.

“All” of the cash donations and aid made to Kızılay Association against receipt can be deducted from the declared income (base). Persons filing personal returns as well as corporations filing returns can deduct all of their donations to Kızılay from their taxable earnings without any percentage or amount limit. (Income Tax Law Art. 89 and Corporate Tax Law Art. 10).
Zakat in Kind
Companies can benefit from tax exemption by recording their food, cleaning, clothing, fuel donations to Kızılay, which works in accordance with the Food Banking Principles, as expenses.
