A Lesson about Nuclear Weapon by an Eyewitness to Hiroshima

Sadae Kasaoka, an 84-year old witness to the Hiroshima nuclear attack in Japan during World War II, who has lost both of her parents during the attack and has dedicated her life to struggle against nuclear armament for long years, visited Istanbul at the invitation of Turkish Red Crescent to send a message of peace from Turkey to the rest of the world.

Welcomed in Istanbul as a guest of Turkish Red Crescent, Hiroshima atomic bomb survivor Sadae Kasaoka gathered with Syrian children, witnesses to the war, at Bagcilar Community Center of Turkish Red Crescent at the first round of her visits. Immediately after, Kasaoka lectured at a panel discussion on nuclear armament organized by Ibn Haldun University. Attended by Red Crescent President Dr. Kerem Kinik, Vice President Dr. Naci Yorulmaz as panelists and many other academicians, Kasaoka reminded during the panel that nuclear weapons threatened all lives, mainly human, and added: “nuclear weapons would probably bring the end of the world. These weapons must be eradicated for the world to survive”.

North Korean nuclear tests would be catastrophic

Referring to her visit to those children, who have been exposed to chemical attacks at continued war in Syria, Kasaoka said: “War hurts people, brings misery so I want all wars to end. North Korean nuclear tests would be catastrophic. A nuclear war would probably bring the end of the world. These weapons must be eradicated for the world to survive”.

“An armament race is all around the world”

Attending the panel, Red Crescent President Dr. Kerem Kınık also mentioned that they have invited Kasaoka to Turkey to meet her with Syrian children, who have been exposed to chemical attacks and that Kasaoka shared her experiences, life story and pain with Syrian children, Kinik added:

“Today Mrs. Kasaoka shared her bitter experiences, moments and feelings of that incident. What she told us is highly important as she is a living history and a woman of the world. Yet again, an armament race is all around the world. As you know, North Korea is an escalating tension. We are born to a world where there are still threats dating from 1940’s. We are all worried and concerned about this. Kasaoka is a person who has suffered all these painful incidents. Therefore, we all think about how to give a message of peace from Turkey to all mankind. We will consider what Red Crescent, Red Cross and other organizations around the world can do to heal people’s wounds, to kill their pain”.

The last destination of Mrs. Kasaoka’s in Turkey was Japanese Consulate in Istanbul. Kasaoka visited Norio Ehara, Japanese Consul General, in accompany with Vice President Dr. Naci Yorulmaz and Secretary General Huseyin Can to call the world once again to nuclear disarmament.
